Breviarium

Breviarium is made by one person, in his spare time. I read every message, though a reply may take a few days.

If you have a GitHub account, you can also open an issue on the project's page.

Reporting an error in the text

A wrong antiphon, a missing commemoration or a misplaced rubric is the most useful thing you can report. Please include:

  1. the date and the hour (for example, Vespers on 16 September 2026);
  2. the rite and the office (Settings → Ritus: Roman, Dominican or Ambrosian; the office of the day, the Little Office or the Office of the Dead);
  3. the settings that change the text: the psalter, English on or off, and Sacerdos vel diaconus adest;
  4. the section, and what you expected to read there, with its source if you have one (a page of a printed breviary is best);
  5. a screenshot, if you can.

The Roman and Dominican texts come from Divinum Officium and are checked against it for every day from 2025 to 2040, so if Divinum Officium has the same mistake, I will pass it on to them as well.

Reporting any other problem

If the app crashes, a page is laid out wrongly, or something does not work as it should, please tell me:

  1. what happened, and what you were doing just before;
  2. whether it happens again when you repeat the same steps;
  3. your iPhone model and iOS version (Settings → General → About);
  4. the app's version (Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Breviarium, or the newest entry in the app's Release notes);
  5. for a layout problem, the theme, font, text size, scrolling and page turn settings, and whether the phone was upright or on its side;
  6. a screenshot or a screen recording.

Questions

Which office is this?

The pre-conciliar office, not the Liturgy of the Hours. The Roman office follows the Breviarium Romanum under the 1960 rubrics, with the Universal Calendar; the Dominican office is the Ordo Prædicatorum of 1962; and Ambrosian Compline is from the Ambrosian breviary of 1957. Choose between them in Settings → Ritus.

Which hours are there?

All eight, from Matins to Compline, and the Martyrology after Prime. Under Officium you can choose the Little Office of Our Lady or the Office of the Dead instead of the office of the day. Under the Ambrosian rite there is Compline only, as no complete Ambrosian breviary is yet available to work from.

Does it need an internet connection?

No, never. Everything is inside the app, and the office is computed on your iPhone for any date you choose.

Is there an English translation?

Yes: turn on English in Settings to read it side by side with the Latin. Scripture is in the Douay-Rheims version, and the rest is Divinum Officium's English. Ambrosian Compline is in Latin only.

Which psalter does it use?

The Vulgate psalter by default. The Pius XII psalter is an option under Psalterium.

Why does Vespers show tomorrow's feast?

Because on the eve of a Sunday or a feast of the first class, Vespers already belongs to it: these are its first Vespers, as the 1960 rubrics require.

Why does the Martyrology show tomorrow's saints?

Because the Martyrology is read on the eve, so each day announces the saints of the next.

Is my country's or my diocese's calendar included?

No. The Roman office follows the Universal Calendar only, without national, diocesan or religious propers.

Can I change how it looks?

Yes. Settings has eight colour themes, six typefaces, the text size, pages that turn or one continuous scroll, and nine app icons.

Is it really free?

Yes: no price, no purchases, no advertisements. It is free software, and its source is on GitHub under the GNU General Public License.
